Autumn Term

Welcome to Year 2 – Autumn Term 🍂

Welcome to our Year 2 Autumn Term page! We have a wonderful term ahead, full of exciting learning, new experiences and opportunities to grow in confidence and independence.

This term, our topics are Movers and Shakers in Autumn 1, where we will discover significant people from the past, followed by Coastline in Autumn 2, where we will explore coastal environments and develop our geographical skills.

In English, we will enjoy exciting stories, such as The Minpins and The Bear and the Piano, and writing our own narratives, while in Maths we will build confidence with number, calculation and problem-solving.

We will also be exploring living things and their habitats in Science. The children will explore the differences between things that are living, dead and have never been alive, and discover how plants and animals are suited to the environments in which they live. We will investigate different habitats, observe and classify living things, and develop our scientific skills by asking questions, making observations and describing what we notice.

How you can help your child at home 🍂

There are lots of simple ways you can support your child's learning throughout the autumn term:

  • Reading: Please aim to read with your child regularly, even for just 10 minutes a day. Talk about the characters, events and new vocabulary in their books.

  • Maths: Practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, number bonds to 10 and 20, and simple addition and subtraction. Times Tables Rock Stars is also a fun way to practise.

  • Writing: Encourage your child to write sentences, stories, shopping lists or little notes at home, remembering capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Try starting a diary or journal for the children to write about their day or a special interest.

  • Topic learning: Talk about significant people from the past, visit the seaside if you can, or explore the natural world together. Ask questions and encourage your child to share what they have learnt in school. You can support your child at home by exploring the natural world together, looking for plants, minibeasts and animals in your garden or local area, and talking about what they need to survive.

  • Independence: Encourage your child to become more independent by giving them opportunities to practise everyday skills at home. This could include getting dressed, putting on and fastening their own coat, organising their school bag, changing their reading book and remembering to bring their belongings to school. Encourage them to take responsibility for their homework and reading, follow simple instructions and have a go at tasks before asking for help. These small steps will help build confidence, resilience and the independence they need as they continue through Year 2.

Special events this autumn 🍂

We have lots of lovely experiences to look forward to, including Roald Dahl Day, our Harvest Festival celebrations and our KS1 Nativity performance in December. These will provide wonderful opportunities for the children to celebrate, perform, work together and make special memories. Any new events or special occasions will be posted on Class Dojo.

We are looking forward to a fantastic autumn term filled with curiosity, creativity, kindness and lots of fun. Thank you for your continued support – it makes such a difference to your child's learning and confidence!
